Sanctuario 19121 (English)
Santuario 19121 is 40-page zine offering a snapshot into two groups organizing in North Philadelphia in 2018—Sanctuary Advocate Coalition and Stadium Stompers, both of whom worked from the Church of the Advocate. All proceeds from this zine go to the Church of the Advocate’s Advocate Cafe!
The Church of the Advocate
An anchor in largely African-American North Philadelphia, Church of the Advocate is a landmark in the religious, social and architectural history of the United States. “We are a community of many people who call the Advocate home. Some of us come for worship. Some come for social services. Some come to volunteer. Some come for events. Some come to usher change into the world. Some are just connected.”
The Advocate Café
The Advocate Café (Soup Kitchen) has been a mainstay for the community since 1983. Monday through Friday 100-125 people per day are offered a delicious and nutritious meal for lunch. The Advocate Café is a fixture in our North Philadelphia community. Many of our patrons serve as volunteers who serve meals, help to ensure cleanliness in addition to managing the community clothes closet which distributes gently used clothing to patrons.
Since the pandemic hit Philadelphia, the Cafe has been busier, serving even more meals than before. This came just months after the Cafe almost closed due to lack of funding.
